One Heart Malawi

Project One Heart Malawi

OneHeartMalawi has initiated a vocational training program in Monkey Bay, Malawi, to address the limited educational and employment opportunities for young adults aged 18 to 29 who are unable to pursue secondary or tertiary education. The program aims to equip these individuals with practical skills in trades such as welding, sewing, hairdressing, and furniture making, thereby enhancing their employability and self-sufficiency.

Educational Context in Malawi

In Malawi, primary education is free and accessible; however, progression to higher education is highly competitive and limited. Only about one-third of students who pass the primary school exit exam are selected for secondary education, which, although not free, remains affordable for many families. The remaining two-thirds must rely on expensive private schools, often beyond their financial means. At the secondary level, only the top 10% of graduates are selected for university admission, leaving the majority without access to further formal education. This educational bottleneck results in a significant number of young adults lacking the qualifications and skills necessary for gainful employment, leading to increased rates of unemployment and poverty.

The Vocational Training Centre Initiative

To mitigate these challenges, OneHeartMalawi established a vocational training centre in Monkey Bay, implemented in four phases:

  1. Phase 1: Land Acquisition

The initial phase involved purchasing land for the construction of the training centre.

  1. Phase 2: Construction of the Centre

Following land acquisition, the centre’s facilities were constructed to accommodate various training programs.

  1. Phase 3: Procurement of Materials

Essential equipment and materials for training in trades like welding and sewing were procured to ensure the effective delivery of practical skills.

  1. Phase 4: Commencement of Training Programs

In June 2024, the centre began offering training programs, starting with courses in welding and sewing.

Achievements and Impact

The inaugural cohort comprised five welding and five sewing students who successfully completed their training. Graduates include individuals such as Funny Mtonga and Esau Jordan, who have acquired marketable skills to enhance their employment prospects. By providing vocational training, OneHeartMalawi aims to reduce unemployment, curb early pregnancies, and prevent substance abuse among young adults by offering them viable career pathways.

Future plans include diversifying the range of vocational courses offered and increasing the number of trainees to amplify the program’s impact on the community.

Conclusion

The vocational training initiative by OneHeartMalawi represents a significant step towards empowering Malawian youth by providing them with practical skills and opportunities for economic independence. This program not only addresses the immediate need for employment among young adults but also contributes to the broader goal of community development and poverty reduction in Malawi.
