Kamitei

Project Kamitei

Kamitei Foundation is a non-profit organisation that aims to improve educational opportunities for children in rural Tanzania through investments in basic facilities, teaching materials, and training, as well as through the granting of individual scholarships to children who cannot afford to pay for their own education. It is run by Jeroen Hardewijk (Dutch) and Jane Ngwatu (Tanzanian) and is registered as a foundation in the Netherlands and in Tanzania.

Kamitei believes that well-educated and employed individuals can act as role models for others in the community and become (in)formal community leaders. Education is key to improving standards of living, empowering communities, and ending the vicious cycle of poverty and powerlessness.

Today, Kamitei supports eight primary schools and two secondary schools. They have also implemented a scholarship programme that has already assisted sixty students. In total, Kamitei has reached 3,500 children and their families.

There are two types of scholarships developed by Kamitei.

  1. The Community Scholarships offer a two-year vocational training programme. Former students have recorded an impressive employment success rate of over 90% during the past five years (compared to the generally accepted benchmark of 70% for successful scholarship programmes).
  2. The Eagle Scholarships support students for eight years, with the goal of enabling the best students to complete a university degree. The selected students have consistently performed in the top 25% of their class, which is a remarkable achievement.

We need your support
